05-23-10, Sue Sarkis Comments on “Pensions Received in 2009 by Retired Glendale Employees

I would not attempt to answer Mr. Dickinson's questions.  However, it is important that he and others realize that the entire pension system across all of America has gotten out of hand and in total contradiction to what the original legislative intent was.  I'm not even going to get into the "civil service" history of why they are supposed to make much LESS than the private sector.  But I will address the inequities.

Not wanting to pick on any individual, I will reflect upon former Fire Chief Christopher Gray only because I know his numbers by heart.  He retired after a mere 21 years with Glendale Fire which, for all intent and purposes means that anyone under 45 years of age could actually accomplish the same fete.  We pay Chief Gray a pension of $185,489.28 per year which reduces to $15,457.44.  Minimum wage workers barely make that much in an entire year.  He is currently the fire chief for the San Rafael Fire Department making in excess of $200,000 per year salary.

I am a licensed private investigator and have been for many years.  I opened my own agency here in Glendale in 1976.  The vast majority of my competition are retired LEO's with full pensions.  This is a relatively new cancer as it wasn't until a few years back, possibly ten, where departments allowed their off-duty officers to moonlight as PI's.  Because they have pensions, they can offer incredibly low rates which puts a serious damper on the rest of us.  What's worse is so very many of them are receiving "disability pensions" which are tax exempt pensions.

Yes, the entire system has to be revamped lest the backbone of America be snapped in half in a heartbeat.

Sincerely yours,
Sue
